- michael greyeyes

Michael Greyeyes (Nêhiyaw) is a multi-hyphenate talent – actor, writer, choreographer, and director from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Widely recognized for over three decades of performance work in film and television, Greyeyes can be seen in the thriller WILD INDIAN, from writer/director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr, that premiered in competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. He garnered a Film Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Award nomination for his leading performance and received rave reviews from critics for his gripping portrayal of Makwa/Michael. On television, Greyeyes also received a Film Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Award nomination for his role as Terry Thomas in RUTHERFORD FALLS, marking a historical moment as the first Native Actor with two nominations in the same year for the awards. He has won the Canadian Screen Award for his leading role as Traylor in BLOOD QUANTUM, the final film by late Mi’kmaw director Jeff Barnaby.

Greyeyes began his work as a director in theatre with Daniel David Moses’ seminal play ALMIGHTY VOICE AND HIS WIFE for Native Earth Performing Arts, seen across Canada and programmed at the Origins Festival in London, UK. As artistic director of Signal Theatre, he has choreographed numerous stage works including BEARING, a searing dance opera that premiered at the 2017 Luminato Festival in Toronto, A SOLDIER’S TALE (National Arts Centre), FROM THINE EYES (Harbourfront Centre), and wrote “Nôhkom” (directed by Yvette Nolan). He was nominated for a Dora award for his direction (with Cole Alvis) for “TWO ODYSSEYS Pimooteewin / Gállábártnit," a full-length evening of Indigenous opera featuring 2 librettos in Cree and Sami.

He is the establishing director for ACTING GOOD, now in its third season on CTV’s Comedy Channel, CRAVE and APTN. Greyeyes has also directed a number of short films, including SEVEN SECONDS and ZIPANGU.
